Behind the Scenes: How I help clients communicate change
Change can be daunting, especially for employees who want to understand what it means for them personally. These days, much of my work focuses on helping clients communicate directly and clearly with their people during transitions. For example, one client recently switched from traditional insurance to self-funded benefits. My role? Making sure every employee understands how this impacts them and keeping those messages front and center where they can’t be missed.
Another project I’ve enjoyed involves documenting detailed work instructions for assemblers and installers. I get in the trenches - observing processes, asking questions, snapping photos - and then turning those insights into clear, user-friendly instructions that support both new hires and seasoned team members. This practical, on-the-ground approach helps businesses keep quality and workmanship standards high.
Getting Started
Every engagement starts the same way: I talk with the client team to understand what change is coming, why it’s needed, and what the future (or end-state) looks like if everything goes well. From there, I craft a tailored communications plan that lays out what employees need to know, when they’ll hear it, and why it matters to them.
Tailoring communication to real people
Not everyone experiences communication the same way. Frontline workers aren’t parked behind computers all day, so emails aren’t the best fit. Leaders need timely updates and talking points so they can confidently guide their teams. Hybrid and remote employees require flexible, creative outreach that meets them wherever they are - whether that’s a quick video update, a Slack ping, or a pulse survey.
My signature moves
Two things really set my work apart. First, my people-leader sneak peeks - these are early info packets that equip leaders with details, facts, and timelines so they can be champions for their people, as well as build buy-in. Second, I dig beyond org charts to find trusted voices within companies. These influencers, who may not always hold formal leadership titles, help amplify messages and generate excitement in authentic, impactful ways.
The a-ha! moment - listening across levels
I’ve learned that real progress comes when you listen at every level - not just leadership. Leaders often know what they know, but may miss what frontline employees understand or worry about. Bridging those gaps is where I focus. Meeting people where they are and guiding the whole team along the journey together.
What success looks like
For me, success is measurable in multiple ways. I rely heavily on feedback loops, but the best sign is when employees get genuinely excited, adopt new processes smoothly, and start doing their work differently - and better. Engaged people make change less painful and create business outcomes that speak for themselves. I measure it all so clients can see the value clearly.
That’s a peek into the actual work I do every day - facing real challenges with practical, tailored communication solutions that make meaningful impact. Want to learn more about how I can help your team navigate change? Let’s talk!
