Recognizing Their Efforts
The Power of Thoughtful Appreciation
Right now, your teams are working hard to meet end-of-the-year deadlines. Last-minute attempts to close the gap if there are outstanding targets or goals. They've spent this year doing more with less, finding efficiencies, and learning AI. People are tired and scared. They aren't sure if they'll be the next name on the list for layoffs or reorganizations, or if they'll get more work piled onto their already overflowing plate.
The truth is, I think leaders are scared right now, too. They see the need to trim waste, cut costs, and get more efficient. Consumer demands, client expectations, shareholder returns, a crazy job market, and an up-and-down economy add to the uncertainty.
It's all got me thinking - what can we do to save our own sanity and ensure our people know we are grateful for their hard work?
Appreciation and recognition go a long way and cost virtually nothing. Now is the time to focus on the things we are grateful for. Take 10 minutes at the beginning of your day to list some of the things you appreciate about your life. They don't have to be big things - and if you are really struggling, think of the things that have made you smile today.
This attitude of gratitude, when put into practice, will remind your brain, and eventually your body, of all the things that are good and pure in your life. This will go a long way to boost your everyday spirits and shift your outlook on your daily life. I've been reading a lot of books about abundance, manifestation, and practicing gratitude recently. It's really helped me overcome some of the darker moments that cloud my mind when I watch too much news coverage or find myself online for too long.
You can also help boost the spirits of others by sharing what they've done to impact you this year. If someone in your life has made you smile this week, why not let them know? If you appreciated an extra rejuvenating yoga class, tell your instructor! If a friend reached out exactly when you needed her - say thank you, let her know you were touched! If your sister called at the exact right time you needed to hear her voice (you know who you are, sissy) - tell her you loved that call.
Take a few moments to explore some creative and meaningful ways to recognize your team during the year-end rush. You might plan some public shoutouts, personalized gifts, care packages, experiential rewards, and team-building events that celebrate team milestones and individual contributions. Timely, sincere appreciation from leadership can boost morale and foster loyalty, especially when people feel overwhelmed by deadlines and changes.
